Khamai Orange scored a career-high 18 points but Rowan was defeated by Christopher Newport, 64-56, in the first day of the Stockton Classic men's basketball tournament. Rowan (2-9) will play Widener on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the pre-determined pairings with the host Ospreys facing CNU (12-3) at 2 p.m.

Orange converted 6-for-10 from the field and grabbed six rebounds, with
Brycen Williams adding 14 points and
Taz Cantey posting 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Profs trailed at halftime, 28-25, but Orange hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 37-37 and Rowan took the lead after a three from Williams. Rowan would lead by as much as 45-40 at the midway point of the half before CNU regained the lead, 48-47, on a three-pointer with 6:59 remaining. The Captains would hold onto the lead the rest of the way, with the final margin being their biggest lead.

Rowan held an eight-point lead, 12-4, early in the game and led for a good part of the first half, until the Captains built up an eight-point lead of their own, 28-20, in the final two minutes of the half.

Neither team shot well in the game with Rowan hitting 31 percent (20-of-64) and 29 percent from three-point range, and Christopher Newport converting 38.3 percent (26-for-67) and also 29 percent from beyond the arc.
