GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University Athletics celebrates the 50
th anniversary of the passing of Title IX of the Higher Education act along with athletic programs nationwide. The landmark Title IX legislation was signed into law on June 23, 1972.
Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 prohibits sexual discrimination at educational institutions that receive federal funding. The federal regulation states that "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Intercollegiate athletics for women in Glassboro began in 1923 with the field hockey and basketball teams. The number of sports and opportunities have increased over the years to the current total of 10 – basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, indoor track, outdoor track and volleyball.
Rowan has made its mark in women's sports at the NCAA Division III level achieving great success over the years while featuring student-athletes who have excelled on and off the field of competition.
