Five Profs Score Weekly NJAC Honors

PITMAN, NJ -- Five Rowan student-athletes garnered weekly honors by the New Jersey Athletic Conference in its weekly awards program.

Kristiina Castagnola and Abby Hainsworth captured NJAC Field Hockey Player of the Week and NJAC Defensive Player of the Week respectively. The volleyball team also had a pair of winners in Natalie Ogden (NJAC Player of the Week) and Courtney Rhoden (NJAC Defensive Player of the Week). Finally, Kevin Gillooly was named the NJAC Men's Swimmer of the Week.

Castagnola collects her third NJAC Offensive Player of the Week honor after leading Rowan to the NJAC crown over the weekend. She scored the championship-winning goal just 1:43 into overtime as the No. 6 Profs defeated No. 5 Kean, 1-0. The score was her third game-winner of the year and team-best 41st point. The win extended Rowan's winning streak to 14 games. Castagnola, recently named the NJAC Midfielder of the Year, ranks second in the conference in points (41) and third in goals scored (17).

Hainsworth picks up her second and Rowan's third NJAC Defensive Player of the Week honor. She picked up two wins in goal in the NJAC Championship run, making two saves in a semifinal win over Ramapo and then five to record Rowan's eighth shutout of the year in the 1-0 win over fifth-ranked Kean in the title game. So far this season, Hainsworth currently ranks second among NJAC goalies with a .846 goals against average and is tied for the most shutouts in the league (6).

Ogden picks up her fourth and Rowan's fifth NJAC Player of the Week honor after leading the Profs to their first NJAC Championship title since 2004 to cap off a very special season for the squad. She totaled 49 kills, 30 digs, 50.0 points, and a .287 hitting percentage. In Wednesday's semifinal win over Kean, the senior recorded a career-high 27 kills and a .400 hitting percentage along with 16 digs. The 27 kills broke her mark of 24 earlier this season, also against the Cougars. She then went for a match-high 22 kills to go with 14 digs in a wild five-set thriller over Montclair State in the championship match. Ogden currently ranks third in the NJAC with 3.48 kills per set this season.

Rhoden earns her first and Rowan's fourth NJAC Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season. She was a force in the middle as the junior recorded 10 blocks (three solo) along with 11 kills and four in their two playoff wins last week. In Wednesday's semifinal win over Kean, Rhoden had five blocks and five kills. On Saturday, she totaled two solo blocks, three assisted blocks, and six kills in the five-set thriller over Montclair State in the NJAC title match. Rhoden currently ranks sixth in the NJAC in total blocks this season (77).

Lastly, Gillooly becomes the second Prof to earn NJAC Swimmer of the Week honors so far this season, joining Week 2 winner Joe Rucci. A three-time All-American and two-time NJAC Swimmer of the Year, Gillooly led Rowan to a pair of conference dual meet victories over William Paterson (119-51) and Montclair State (177-120). He swam a leg of the winning 200 free relay against the Pioneers, swimming a 20.73-second split to help the Profs to a time of 1:27.73. The Profs currently own the top Metro time in that event and the 17th-fastest in NCAA Division III. Gillooly won four events - two individual and two relays - at Montclair State. His 100 back time of 50.97 second ranks atop the Metro region and is the 18th-fastest in the nation. His 200 back time of 1:54.17 ranks second in the Metro and 26th nationally.  He swam a 45.15 split on the 400 free relay, helping the Profs to the second-fastest time in the Metro and 33rd nationally (3:14.44). He also swam a leg of the 200 free relay with a split of 23.77 seconds to help the Profs win with a time of 1:37.30.

The field hockey team (16-2) will host the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament starting on Saturday. The Profs will face the winner of Wednesday's game between Ohio Wesleyan and SUNY-Cortland. The other contest on Saturday has Washington & Lee taking on the winner of Scranton and Ursinus.

The volleyball squad (27-5) heads to Johns Hopkins for their first-round match where they'll square off with Springfield on Friday. With a win, the Profs would face the winner of the host Blue Jays and Cabrini.

The swimming & diving teams will host the Rowan Diving Invitational here on Saturday at the Tony Lisa Natatorium.
