William Paterson Women's Basketball Upsets Rowan, 90-81

WAYNE, NJ  – The William Paterson University women's basketball team upset Rowan University, 90-81 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Guard Gabby Harris (fr. South River, NJ/South River) led the way with 23 points.  Forward Tori Woetzel (jr. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) contributed with 14 points and guard Kristina Ulrich (fr. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) followed with 13.  Guard Nikole Williams (sr. Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) chipped in with 12 points and guard/forward Alliera McCoy (fr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) added 10.  McCoy also pulled down 10 rebounds while Woetzel grabbed seven.   
 
For Rowan, guard Anyssa Sanchez (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Sterling) scored a game-high 24 points.  Guard Summer Crilley (jr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) totaled 19 points and seven boards. Guard/forward Alex Raring (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and guard Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) produced 10 and nine points respectively. 
 
The Profs have a 13-5 record with a 7-4 New Jersey Athletic Conference mark.  The Pioneers are 11-7 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
 
William Paterson jumped out to a 13-2 lead at 5:49 in the first quarter.  Woetzel scored six of the 13 points.  McCoy's basket with 2:02 left made the score 15-7.  Guard Mandy Jiang (sr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) hit a three at the 24 second mark and pulled the Profs within five (17-12) going into the second stanza.  The Pioneers were ahead 21-16 at 7:53 after Woetzel's layup.  Sanchez (7:40) and center April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) (6:51) each tallied a basket and Rowan trailed 21-20.  Raring tied the score at 24 (5:01) with a layup.  William Paterson took back the lead (31-26) with a 7-2 run.  Harris ended the spurt with a three-pointer (3:29).  She sank two foul shots (0:37), which made the score 43-33.  The Pioneers were ahead 45-34 at the break. 
 
In the third period, William Paterson had a 14 point advantage (61-47) with 2:24 left.  Sanchez's jumper (0:35) pulled the Profs within nine points (65-56).  Williams had a layup at 9:35 in the final quarter to lead by 11 (67-56).  Rowan scored eight straight points to cut the deficit to three (67-64) at 7:19.  McCoy's layup (4:48) increased the Pioneers' lead to eight (72-64).  Sanchez (3:11) and Szymczyk (2:47) each had two free throws and the Profs were down by three (76-73).  McCoy and Harris registered back-to-back jumpers to lead 80-73 with 1:34 remaining.  Sanchez made a layup and foul shot (0:45) to pull within four (80-76).  William Paterson's final 10 points came at the line.
 
Next, Rowan is home on Wednesday, Jan. 25 against Rutgers-Camden at 6 p.m.
