SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Rowan University women’s track and field team won the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship on Friday. The Profs were first with 63 points among 57 teams. The two-day championships were held at Springfield College.
Shailah Williams (fr. Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) won the 400 meters in 56.32. She improved on her school record of 56.52. Williams had a fifth place in the 200 meters with a time of 24.80. Vanessa Wright (sr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) came in second in the 1,500 meters. Her time of 4:31.72 broke the University mark (4:31.99) that was held by Jenn Rawls (2010).
The 4x800 meter relay with Vanessa Valdes (fr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack), Jessalynn Wright (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Melirah Searcy (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) and Vanessa Wright finished second in 9:10.36. Their time was better than their school record of 9:12.68. The 4x100 meter relay took third place (47.82). The 4x100 included Williams, Jamie Thompson (jr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick), Shantel Beckford (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Brianna Crofton (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.).
Thompson finished fourth in the long jump with 18’ 11.25” (5.77 meters), which was a new school mark. The previous record was 18’ 6” (5.64 meters) by Marketa Morse (1995). Thompson also had a fifth place (14.56) in the 100 meter hurdles and was ninth (1:03.88) in the 400 meter hurdles.
Crofton took 11th (58.63) in the 400 meters while Jewel Brown (fr. Clayton, NJ/Clayton) and Tashay Wilson (so. Hillside, NJ/Hillside) were 28th (59.97) and 32nd (1:00.45) respectively. Joyce Perry (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) came in 12th (1:04.78) in the 400 meter hurdles and Searcy was 17th (1:06.21).
Jessalynn Wright finished 17th (2:18.36) in the 800 meters. In the discus, Jess Lomonaco (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) was 19th (116’ 3”, 35.43 meters) followed by Emily Spieker (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), 21st (111’ 7”, 34.01 meters). Magan Kustera (jr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) came in 21st (5’ 0.5”, 1.54 meters) in the high jump and Crofton was 22nd (25.75) in the 200 meters.
