Rowan Receives Second Seed at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament on Wednesday-Sunday, May 18-22. The regional will be played at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ.

The second seeded Profs (30-11-1) will face the seventh seed Randolph-Macon College (24-18) in the first round on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. Also in the first round, the fourth seed Misericordia University (28-14) plays the fifth seed Messiah College (25-17) at 10 a.m. Top seeded Kean University (36-8) takes on the eighth seed Catholic University (22-19) at 1:15 p.m. and the third seed Alvernia University (35-7) goes head-to-head with the sixth seed Johns Hopkins University (25-11) at 4:30 p.m.

The regional tournament is double elimination. The winner advances to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Friday-Tuesday, May 27-31 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.

It is Rowan’s 20th appearance and second straight in the national tournament. Rowan has a 56-36 record in the NCAAs and has advanced to the national finals sixth times. The Profs won the NCAA Division III Championship in 1978 and 1979 and finished third in 1977.

Randolph-Macon earned an automatic bid as the winner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets are in the national tournament for the second time, with the first coming in 2008. Rowan started the season with three games at Randolph-Macon. The teams split a doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets taking the first contest, 8-6 and the Profs winning the second, 7-3. Rowan had a 14-1 victory in the third game.

Kean won the New Jersey Athletic Conference for an automatic bid. The Cougars are in the NCAAs for the sixth straight season and ninth time overall. Kean won the national title in 2007 and has a 24-14 mark in the tournament.

Alvernia received an at-large bid to the regional tournament. The Crusaders are making their eighth appearance and they are in the NCAAs for the third consecutive year. Alvernia is 9-14 in tournament play.

Misericordia claimed an automatic bid by winning the Freedom Conference Championship. The Cougars are in the national tournament for the first time. Messiah captured the Commonwealth Conference title for an automatic bid. The Falcons have reached the NCAAs four times and they have a 4-6 mark.

Johns Hopkins received an automatic bid after winning the Centennial Conference. The Blue Jays are making their 18th appearance in the regional tournament and fifth straight. Johns Hopkins has a 39-34 record in the NCAAs and took second place in 2008. Catholic also had an automatic bid as the Landmark Conference Champion. It is the Cardinals’ first time in the national tournament.

There are 55 teams that are competing in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament. There are four regional sites with six teams, one with seven schools and three sites with eight teams. Thirty-eight conferences received automatic bids (Pool A) and two independent schools were selected from Pool B. The remaining 15 teams were chosen on an at-large basis from the automatic qualifying conferences and remaining independent institutions.
