GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University honored its All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and special award winners at an end of the year banquet on Monday, May 3 in the University’s Eynon Ballroom.

The special award winners were football quarterback Frank Wilczynski, the Richard Wackar Athletic Award; field hockey midfielder Jenna Lombardo, the Dr. Shirley O’Day Athletic Award; football guard Josh Weiss, the Dr. Michael Briglia Scholar-Athlete Award; women’s soccer midfielder Krista Verzi, the Dr. Mary A. Rice Scholar-Athlete Award; softball designated player Jamie Parks and football cornerback Malcolm Dock, the Rowan Prof Award; associate dean and professor Dr. Steven Chin and Carol Eigenbrot, the Distinguished Service Awards and Dave Naphy and Robert Zazzali, the Prof Pride Awards. Men’s soccer goalkeeper Mike Boisselle and women’s soccer back Ashley Schaffer both received the Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete Award.

The Wackar Award is given to a senior male athlete who has participated in two years of varsity sports and has demonstrated outstanding athletic achievement, leadership and attitude. A team captain, Wilczynski (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) led Rowan with 1,456 yards passing and 11 touchdowns with 117 completions in 207 attempts. He was also the Profs’ top rusher with 793 yards and 15 touchdowns on 91 carries. Wilczynski holds the school records for career rushing yards by a quarterback (1,596 yards on 207 rushes), longest gain by a quarterback in a game (68 yards vs. Western Connecticut State, October 10, 2009) and most rushing touchdowns in a season (15 in 2009). He was a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Conference first team selection. Wilczynski earned D3football.com All-East Region third team honors and was chosen to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team.

The Dr. Shirley O’Day Award is given to a senior female athlete who has participated in three years of varsity sports and has demonstrated leadership, cooperation, good attitude and a fine academic standing. A captain, Lombardo (sr. Barnegat, NJ/Southern Reg.) saw action in 54 career games. She totaled 12 points with two goals and eight assists. In 2009, she recorded one goal and six assists. Lombardo was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-America second team and South Atlantic All-Region first team. She was chosen the NJAC Midfielder of the Year and to the All-Conference first team. Lombardo was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game. She is a three-time NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad honoree and a two-time NJAC All-Academic honorable mention selection.

The Briglia Award is presented to a senior male athlete who has participated in two years of varsity sports, has a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 and possesses skill, attitude and dedication to athletics. A guard, Weiss (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) anchored the Profs’ offensive line. This season, Rowan averaged 239.5 rushing yards, 169.2 passing yards and 408.7 yards of total offense per game. The Profs posted 38.9 points per game and only surrendered seven sacks in 10 games. This year, Weiss was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II first team. He earned second team honors in 2008. Weiss is a two-time Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team and NJAC All-Conference second team selection. He also garnered NJAC All-Academic honorable mention in 2008 and 2007. Weiss has a 3.416 GPA in accounting.

The Dr. Mary Rice Award is presented to a senior female athlete with two years of varsity experience and a GPA over 3.0. The recipient must possess excellence in skills, attitude and dedication. A team captain, Verzi (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) recorded 50 points with 17 goals and 16 assists in 73 career games. She also scored four game-winners. Verzi was a NJAC All-Conference first team honoree in 2009 and 2008. This season, she was chosen to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro All-Star second team and was celebrated as one of the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women’s Women of the Year. She earned NJAC All-Academic honorable mention three straight years. Verzi is an English and secondary education major with a 3.779 GPA.

This is the fourth year for the Rowan Prof Award. It is given to a male and female athlete that exemplify the meaning of the ROWAN tradition through Responsibility, Ownership, Winning, Accountability and No excuses. Parks (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) has played on the softball team for four years. In 71 career contests, she is hitting .337 with 23 RBIs and 16 runs scored. Her extra base hits include five doubles, one triple and one home run. Parks received 2009 NJAC All-Academic honorable mention. Dock (sr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) played in 17 games in his two years at Rowan. He collected 30 tackles, 18 solo and 12 assisted. Dock compiled 2.5 tackles for a loss (-11 yards), four passes defended, three interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In 2008, he returned a pick for a touchdown. This season, he was selected to the NJAC All-Conference first team.

The Distinguished Service Award is given in recognition and appreciation of outstanding contributions and support of the student-athletes and athletic department at Rowan University. Chin is the associate dean and an associate professor in the College of Engineering. He has served as a member of the University’s faculty since 1997. Eigenbrot is an assistant director of the Rowan Career and Academic Planning Center.

The Prof Pride Award is chosen by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is presented to a non student-athlete that provides support for all of Rowan University athletics. Naphy is a member of the University’s admissions staff. Zazzali is the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs.

The Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete Award is given to the male and female athlete with the highest GPA. The athlete must have completed four semesters of college and be an active contributor on a varsity team. Boisselle (jr. Holland, PA/Council Rock S.) has been a member of the men’s soccer team for three years. He has a 3.865 GPA in athletic training. Schaffer (sr. Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) is a two-year starter for the Profs. In 42 career games, she registered six assists. Schaffer is majoring in psychology with a 3.92 GPA.
