BROCKPORT, NY – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team lost to The College at Brockport, 16-9 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday.
Brockport (13-3) advances to the regionals and will play host Franklin & Marshall College (14-3) on Saturday, May 15 at 11:30 a.m. The region final is on Sunday, May 16 at 1 p.m. The national semifinals and final are slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23 at Clark Field in Gettysburg, PA.
Rowan ends the season with an 11-6 record. It was the Profs’ eighth appearance and third straight in the national tournament. This season, Rowan won the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship with a 5-0 conference mark.
Midfielder Melissa Hill (sr. Rochester, NY/Brighton) was Brockport’s scoring leader with six goals and one assist. Attack Sarah Brown (fr. Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) contributed with four goals and one assist. Attack Dayna Piraino (so. Syracuse, NY/Henninger) chipped in with three goals and four assists. Attack Carly Motondo (so. Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) added two goals and midfielder Karen Bianchi (so. Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) had one. Midfielder Lindsey Cayea (sr. Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied three assists.
For Rowan, attack Tori Hart (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) totaled three goals and two assists. Attack Lauren Yee (jr. Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) scored three times. Midfielder Michelle Lubrano (so. Delanco, NJ/Holy Cross) collected two goals and one assist. Attack Ellen Brigham (fr. Oakton, VA/Oakton) contributed with one goal. Midfielder Trish Harrington (jr. Mahwah, NJ/Suffern (NY)) assisted on two goals and attack Alayna Morris (sr. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) had one assist.
The Golden Eagles totaled 30 shots and the Profs took 22. Brockport goalie Jamie Kaminsky (jr. Oakdale, NY/Sayville) made eight saves. Rowan goalie Kerry Pehnke (so. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) stopped seven shots.
Brockport got on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal by Brown at 2:33. Yee tied it up (4:28) on a pass from Harrington. Brown recorded her second goal at 7:53 with an assist from Piraino. Brigham made the score 2-2 (8:54) and Hart had the assist. The Golden Eagles pulled away with six straight goals for an 8-2 advantage. Brown had the first one (12:40) followed by Hill with a free position shot (14:14).
With 13:59 remaining, Brown registered her fourth goal. Bianchi hit the net (17:16) on a pass by Piraino. Hill had her second goal of the game at 12:11 with a feed from Piraino. Motondo posted the last goal in the surge (12:54), assisted by Piraino. Hart scored unassisted with 1:30 left. At the 37 second mark, Motondo ended the first period with a goal assisted by Hill. The Golden Eagles were ahead 9-3 at the break.
The second half started with the two teams exchanging goals twice. Piraino made the score 10-3 at the 36th minute. Yee scored the Profs’ goal (36:23) with a pass from Morris. Piraino had an unassisted goal (36:47). Yee answered with a goal at 38:05 and Harrington picked up the assist. Brockport tacked on two more goals to lead by eight (13-5). Piraino (40:19) and Hill (41:33) both scored on passes from Cayea. Hart hit the net (44:49) and Lubrano followed with a free position goal (48:02).
Hill put the Golden Eagles up 15-7 after scoring two straight goals. The first one was unassisted (49:18) and the second came on a free position shot (53:56). Rowan pulled within six goals (15-9) after Lubrano (54:10) and Hart (55:42) each scored. Hill ended the scoring with a goal assisted by Brown with 3:42 remaining.
